BAY OF PLENTY CHASE DOWN 300 PLUS TO BEAT HAMILTON IN FERGUS HICKEY COMPETITION

Posted: Monday, 23 February 2015

While Bay of Plenty is having mixed fortunes in the current ND Fergus Hickey Rosebowl competition – the players will long remember the Hamilton two day match-up, where they chased down the Waikato sides 300 plus total to grab a five wicket victory.

Hamilton won the toss and decided to bat in the annual two-day Fergus Hickey Rosebowl fixture, between the Waikato side and Bay of Plenty, played during the weekend (21/22 February 2015)

Led by a marathon innings from Keir Bettley who posted 129 runs of 287 balls, Hamilton declared late on day one at 313/9, when Bettley who came in at three was finally dismissed, caught behind by Bay keeper Matt Golding. Anurag Verma batting at seven also made a sterling contribution to his team’s first innings total with a hard fought 76.

The best of the Bay of Plenty bowlers was Donovan Deeble who tool three wickets for 63 runs with Tony Goodin returning 2/40.

At stumps on day one Bay of Plenty had reached 20 without loss. Rain on day two delayed the start to 12.30pm, with the first Bay wicket falling at the 25 run mark. The arrival of Joe Carter batting at three turned around the Bay side’s momentum. When the Bay of Plenty master blaster was dismissed for a neat one hundred - Bay of Plenty were right in the game at 186/4.

When Mitch McCann was stumped for 65, by Hamilton keeper Peter Bocock, the match was still evenly poised at 251 for the loss of five wickets. Enter Brett Hampton and Jono Boult who took their team to victory, as they blasted the ball to the boundary. Hampton posted an unbeaten 61, while Northern Knight and long time Bay of Plenty all-rounder Jono Boult blasted a quickfire 41 off just 31 balls.

The Bay of Plenty win takes their two-day (and three day) record against Hamilton in the last three seasons, to four wins and a solitary loss.
