BOP Mini World Cups Around the Regions

Posted: Wednesday, 19 November 2014

There was plenty of excitement and laughter when the three BOPCA Mini World Cups were played out in the first two weeks in November 2014.

The Mini World Cup was initiated by Bay of Plenty Cricket in 2004, to introduce year five and six school pupils, to the enjoyment of the game. To give the competition a real flavour of international cricket, all school teams represent a cricket-playing nation.

First up was the Eastern Bay of Plenty module, at Rex Morepeth Park in Whakatane on the 5th November 2014, with the youngsters providing their own brand of fireworks. Eight teams that included Allandale, Ohope, Te Mahoe Schools and St Josephs Primary took part in the Eastern Bay Mini World Cup.

In a final where there was action aplenty throughout the two innings, Ohope and Allandale finished their turn at bat with 81 runs apiece during their 16 overs. A super over was then played out with both sides posting 10 runs each, with organizers deciding that the Eastern Bay Mini World Cup would be awarded jointly to the Ohope and Allandale teams.

St Marys School, won the Western Bay of Plenty Mini World Cup on Wednesday 12th November 2014. Playing under the banner of England defeated Tauranga Primary (aka South Africa) in the championship final.

An extra bonus for the sixteen Western Bay schools playing in the 11th Mini World Cup, was the arrival during the lunch break, of the 2015 Cricket World Cup which is on a nationwide tour of the country.

St Marys and Tauranga Primary reached the 2014 title decider, as the only two unbeaten sides after three rounds of preliminary play, with Greenpark and Papamoa squaring off for the bronze medal position. Tauranga Primary batted first and posted 84 points with St Marys scoring 112 points, to annex the 2014 Western Bay Mini World Cup trophy.

A record 17 teams lined up to contest the Taupo Mini World Cup on Friday 14th November 2014, with a Year 7&8 division in addition to the traditional Year 5&6 teams. Lake Taupo Christian School, Hilltop, Waipahihi, Waipakihi, St Patrick's and Mountview Schools all entered teams in tournament held at Owen Delaney Park

After an exciting day of runs being scored and wickets taken, mixed in with plenty of laughter, the two division winners were found. The Year 5&6 trophy was taken out by Waipahihi School with Hilltop School grabbing the Year 7&8 prize. Lake Taupo Christian School won the most improved award with Mount View School winning the Sportsmanship trophy.
