GREERTON CRICKET CLUB TO REPRESENT ND AT NATIONAL CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS

Posted: Thursday, 2 April 2015

The Greerton Cricket Club premier cricket side, are making their first appearance at the National Club Cricket Championships, being hosted by the Cornwall Cricket Club in Auckland next week (7th – 12th April 2015)

This year’s National Club Championships, is the 21st edition of the tournament that matches the New Zealand Major Association club champions, in head to head battle to find the best club team in the country.

In the last twenty years, some of the best cricket players in the country have played in the season ending championships. The list of national representatives includes Otumoetai Cadets Lorne Howell and Trent Boult, along with the likes of James and Hamish Marshall, Jesse Ryder and Nathan McCullum.

The path to the National Club Championships, started when Greerton won the BOPCA Baywide Cup in December 2014, beating Mount Maunganui in the title decider.

In January 2015, the Greerton First XI won a high scoring ND Club Champs semi-final match-up with Waikato Valley team Kaipaki. Greerton batted first at home at Pemberton Park and posted 302/8, before bowling the visitors out for 266. Individual honours were taken by Greerton master blaster Brett Hampton, who smashed 124 runs, with Campbell Thomas taking four wickets for 39 runs.

The Bay of Plenty team, booked their National Club Champs berth when they beat Northland side Maungakaramea in the ND Club Championship Final at Pemberton Park in February, to lift aloft the Eric Petrie Cup in triumph.

Maungakaramea batted first and were restricted to a relatively modest 175 all out, with Dan Spence in grand form with the ball taking a five wicket bag. Led by a gritty knock of 71 not out from Brett Hampton and a half century by Can Neal, the Western Bay team ground out  a hard fought four wicket win.

Greerton are aiming to join Otumoetai Cadets who are the only Bay of Plenty team to win the prestigious National title. The Cadets Premier side accomplished the notable feat in the 2003/04 season.
