MOUNT MAUNGANUI AND TE PUKE COMBINED TEAM BLAST THEIR WAY TO VICTORY AGAINST EASTERN BAY

Posted: Monday, 20 October 2014

For the second day in a row, weather played a big hand in the outcomes of the two Attrill Cup matches scheduled for Sunday (19 October 2014). A delayed start at Blake Park in Mount Maunganui, saw a reduced forty-over match completed, while a wet pitch at Boord Park resulted in the game between Rotorua and Tauranga being abandoned without a ball being bowled.

Eastern Bay of Plenty won the toss at Blake Park, against the Western Bay combined team drawn from the Te Puke and Mount Maunganui clubs and elected to bat. The Eastern Bay side suffered a big setback when star batsman Alex Yates was caught of the first ball of his team’s innings.

A 49 run third wicket partnership between Rhys Keighley (35) and David Brent (30) got the visitors back in the match, albeit with a modest run rate. The Eastern Bay tail of Jaspreet Singh (23no) and Mike Young provided some momentum, but Eastern Bay reached just 147/9 after their forty overs. Mount Maunganui medium quick Alex Goodin and Te Puke skipper Mitch McCann, did the damage with the ball taking three wickets apiece.

The Western Bay sides charge for victory, was a whirlwind attack on the Eastern Bay of Plenty bowlers. Peter Drysdale (31) and Tim Clarke got their side away to a flyer, putting on 55 runs in the first seven overs, with Drysdale cracking seven 4’s. Ben Musgrave (51no) and Mitch McCann (38no) blasted the Western Bay side to victory in the 19th over, with eight wickets to spare. Musgrave belted eights 4’s and a 6, while McCann was also in the high intensity action to finish with seven 4’s
