NORTHERN KNIGHTS TO HOST THE FORD TROPHY FINAL AT THE BAY OVAL

Posted: Thursday, 3 April 2014

The Bay Oval at Mount Maunganui, will again take centre stage this season, with the final of the Ford Trophy being played out on Saturday (5 April 2014) after the Northern Knights won through to the title decider.

During 2014, the Bay Oval has quickly established itself as an International Cricket venue, which produces plenty of runs but also rewards quality bowling. In January, the Bay Oval hosted 14 Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2014 games, where diverse cricket nations such as Uganda, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, Kenya and eventual CWC15 qualifier United Arab Emirates, showcased their talent and skills.

During the CWCQ14 playoffs the Bay Oval main ground received temporary ICC ODI (One Day International) status, when the Netherlands and Canada played off for seventh place as both sides have ICC ODI rankings. Further accolades came, when the Bay Oval hosted the last two games of the T20 Women’s International series, between the White Ferns and the West Indies in early March.

The final stanza of the Ford Trophy, which is in effect the NZ Cricket One-Day championship, will bring home a number of players who have travelled the Bay of Plenty Cricket pathway. Northern Knights skipper Daniel Flynn along with Graeme Aldridge, Jono Boult, Joe Carter, Brett Hampton and Bharat Popli and the Bays Black Caps of Kane Williamson, Trent Boult and Cory Anderson, have all worn the Knights strip this season.

One Bay of Plenty player who has had a stunning season is Joe Carter. The top order batsman set a new Bay of Plenty record score, when he blasted 215 not out against Poverty Bay in a Fergus Hickey Rosebowl match during March. Playing for the Northern Knights, Joe broke the New Zealand first class debut season record smashing 674 runs for the Knights, surging past Greg Hay from CD who posted 593 runs in the 2006/07 season.

The Northern Knights opponents in the Ford Trophy Final, will be the Wellington Firebirds who beat the Canterbury Wizards on Wednesday (2 April 2014) to make the Ford Trophy title decider.
