NZ White Ferns V BOP Invitational Eleven

Posted: Tuesday, 26 August 2014

The White Ferns desire for a quality hit-out, before their departure for their tour of the West Indies came to fruition in spades, when they played at Bay of Plenty Invitation XI at the Bay Oval on Saturday (23 August 2014).

A Bay team comprising some of the most exciting prospects in Bay of Plenty secondary school cricket, was backed up by Development coach Charles Williams and dashing Bay of Plenty batsmen Ben Musgrave and Cam Neal.

With the primary aim of the game, being to give the New Zealand Women’s representatives the opportunity to dust of the winter cobwebs, the White Ferns used their full complement of bowlers.

The Bay selection batted first with Yohann Irani and Sean Dykes putting on a 51 run partnership. Enter Ben Musgrave, who made his Bay senior men’s team debut last season from the ranks of Tauranga Boys College, who gave the White Ferns plenty of fielding practice as he smashed a unbeaten 140 off 113 balls. His time at the crease, included 7 sixes and 14 fours as the Bay side reached 259/3 in their allotted fifty overs.

Unfazed by the large total required for victory, the White Ferns batting attack were quickly on top of the required run rate. While Amy Satterthwaite top scored with a near half century, a couple of the side’s batswoman retired, to give all of the batting attack turn at the crease.

Victory for the White Ferns came in the 49th over in near dark conditions. Christian McDonald and Liam Kelly took two wickets apiece for the Bay team with Shannon McSkimming and Mikare Leef also bowling with genuine enthusiasm. Both sides were impressed with the outstanding order of the Bay Oval wicket and outfield, which allowed such a big scoring encounter, to take place in the middle of winter.

Result
Bay of Plenty Invitation XI 259/3 lost to New Zealand White Ferns 262/5.
