Posted: Wednesday, 22 October 2014

South Africa defeated the New Zealand Black Caps, in game one of the ANZ series played at the Bay Oval on Tuesday (21 October 2014), in a match where Bay of Plenty born and bred fast bowler Trent Boult played a major part.

Not since, World Series Cricket came to Tauranga in 1978, have such a galaxy of world cricket stars played in the Western Bay of Plenty.

The Black Caps made a reasonable start, however the South Africa bowlers struck with the score on 68, with three quick wickets without a run being added. The New Zealand representatives were in a perilous state, when number eleven batsmen Trent Boult came to the crease.

Having reached 156, with just one wicket in hand, Luke Ronchi and Trent Boult set about rescuing the New Zealand innings. A big six from Boult, saw the last two kiwi batsmen settle down and add 74 runs to the Black Cap total.  When Ronchi was agonisingly dismissed on 99, the Black Caps had posted a target of 231. The 11th wicket, 74 run partnership between Ronchi and Boult, set a new ODI record against all countries with Trent posting his highest ODI score of 21 not out.

A fiery start from Trent Boult saw him grab two early wickets. When South Africa were 49/7, the Black Caps were in the match, however a unbeaten stand between AB de Villiers (89no) and JP Duminy took their team to a six wicket win with 11 balls remaining.

The two international sides get to do it all again, on Friday (24 October) at the Bay Oval, before moving to Seddon Park in Hamilton for game three of the ANZ Series next Monday (27 October 2014).
