TE PUKE AND MOUNT MAUNGANUI CHASE VITAL WILLIAMS CUP POINTS AT THE TE PUKE DOMAIN

Posted: Friday, 30 January 2015

The winner of this Saturdays (31 January 2015) Williams Cup encounter between City Sports Bar Te Puke and Carrus Mount Maunganui, will take a big step towards a place in the top four playoffs on the 21st March 2015.

The two sides have a rivalry that dates back a number of decades and both sides will take 2015 unbeaten records into their clash at the Te Puke Domain.

The inform Mount Maunganui batsman this season, is wicket keeper Tim Clarke, who smashed his second century of the season last Saturday. His 125 against BOP Indians and 138 earlier in the season, sees him as only the second Baywide batsman to post two centuries.

Three Te Puke batsmen have reached the magical three figure score this season. Sam Tallott, who travels from Poverty Bay to play for Te Puke, is top of the list with 132. Long-time Te Puke player Stephen Crossan, blasted his maiden three figure score with 100 not out in T20 action, with Tai Bridgman-Raison posting a neat 100 in November.

Bay of Plenty inter-city rivalry will be on the line when Rotorua Central plays Element IMF Cadets, at the Tauranga Domain. Both teams have experienced the joy of lifting the biggest prize in Baywide cricket aloft in victory, in the last decade. In 2007 Central defeated Mount Maunganui, while Cadets have annexed the Williams Cup twice in the intervening period.

Eves Realty Greerton, will go into the match-up with Whakatane United at Pemberton Park, still hurting from last week’s poor performance with the bat against Te Puke. The current Baywide Cup title holders were removed for just 77 -  however the Greerton bowlers then struck back, with Te Puke getting home with a solitary wicket to spare.

While Whakatane United don’t win out of turn, with  a full strength side on the field they are capable of extending all-comers. The team’s batting fortunes usually revolve around the performances of Alex and Tom Yates and long-time club member Stephen Ford. Joel Mathews bowls with genuine enthusiasm and last weekend took four wickets against a strong Cadets batting line-up.

BOP Indians and Tauranga Boys College could have a good tussle at Smallbone Park in Rotorua, although Tauranga Boys will be backing up from four days of Super Eight cricket this week.
