TWO BAYWIDE CUP MATCHES PRODUCE RESULTS IN A RAIN INTERRUPTED DAY

Posted: Sunday, 19 October 2014

The changing weather in the Western Bay of Plenty and Rotorua on Saturday (18 October 2014) resulted in two Baywide Cup games producing a result, while the other two were abandoned in the second innings.

With rain lurking around the outskirts Boord Park in Rotorua, Carrus Mount Maunganui won the toss and asked BOP Indians to bat first. Mount slow bowler Dale Swan grabbed a five wicket haul in BOP Indians short and sharp visit to the crease.

Northern Knights new recruit Bharat Popli, posted most of the Bay of Plenty Indians runs, as the home side were dismissed for just 81. Mount Maunganui wasted little time in chasing down the modest target to post a nine wicket win. Mount skipper Peter Drysdale top scored with an unbeaten 44.

On the adjacent Boord two artificial wicket, the match-up between Rotorua Central and Eves Realty Greerton consisted of a single innings, before rain saw the encounter abandoned. Greerton declared at 220 for 9 with Kent Hodder posting a neat half century. Just a couple of balls into the Central reply, the heavens opened, with the match eventually abandoned.

While the Element IMF Cadets defeated City Sports Bar Te Puke at Gordon Spratt Reserve in Papamoa – just a dozen kilometers away at Nicholson Field, the Tauranga Boys College match with Whakatane United failed to produce a result.

Te Puke batted first and were dismissed for 217 in the 53rd over. Bay batsman Mitch McCann batted with confidence to top score with 66, with Northern Knights bowler Jono Boult taking three wickets for 45 runs. Another ND contracted player in Joe Carter took Cadets through to a five wicket victory, with an unbeaten 71 runs.

The Tauranga Boys clash with Whakatane United went within four overs of producing a result. Tauranga Boys won the toss and elected to bat and were removed for 159. Gareth Wallace top scored with a hard fought 30, while Zimbabwean new recruit David Brent grabbed a five wicket bag.

With rain clouds lurking around the ground the Eastern Bay visitors fired up the run rate from the start of their innings to reach 89/3, when rain halted proceedings in the 16th over, with four overs remaining to constitute a match.
