TWO JUNIOR SECONDARY DAY CAMPS TO TAKE CENTRE STAGE IN OCTOBER

Posted: Tuesday, 29 September 2015

Much of the success of Bay of Plenty Cricket teams and player development in recent seasons is the result of innovative thinking by the BOPCA High Performance team.

Seven ND Fergus Hickey Rosebowl titles since 2000 and winning the Hawke Cup and four successful defences of the prestigious NZ Cricket trophy, bear testament to the success of the senior representative program. In addition, Daniel Flynn, Graeme Aldridge, Kane Williamson and Trent Boult have been selected for the Black Caps, with a number of other Bay of Plenty players, progressing to the professional ranks.

The Bay of Plenty success is built upon a pathway that identifies and develops the skills of the regions youngsters. Bay of Plenty age group teams compete in the ND Primary, Junior and Senior Secondary tournaments and also participate in the ND Secondary Schoolgirls competition.

A continuation of the Bay Cricket innovative thinking, will see two Bay of Plenty age-group day camps held in October 2015, where outside specialists will be brought in to add value to the age group development programmes.

BOPCA Cricket Manager Tai Bridgman-Raison said “This is the first time that we have brought in nutrition advice and mental skills to our age-group program. It is part of a professional attitude to age-group development with a holistic wrap-around approach”.

“The school holiday one-day camps in Rotorua and Mount Maunganui follow on from a several specific skills clinics and training days held in the two Bay of Plenty regions during early spring”. The Coastland (Western Bay of Plenty) wider training squads has received specific batting, fast and spin bowling tuition along with wicket keeping instruction. The Lakeland (Rotorua, Eastern Bay of Plenty and Taupo) squad approach has focused on solid training days at the Rotorua BHS indoor sports centre.

Sport Bay of Plenty are taking a leading role in the delivery of the day camp program in both regions. A sports nutrition workshop will be presented by Larissa Cuff and Lauren Atkinson from the regional sports umbrella organisation. The two nutrition specialists will demonstrate how to eat properly to maximize on-field performance as well as the keys to a healthy lifestyle.

After a short mid-morning break, six local Bay of Plenty Northern Knights will take a series of skills and drills. Knights skipper Daniel Flynn along with Jono Boult, Tony Goodin, Bharat Popli, Brett Hampton and Dean Brownlie, will share their playing knowledge and experience of top class cricket with the day camp participants.

The two day camps will sign of with a presentation by Dave Clarke from Sport BOP who leads the Sport NZ “Pathway 2 Podium’ program in the Bay of Plenty. Dave will discuss the mental side of sport performance giving simple tips and techniques for dealing with stress and anxiety, how to develop focus and attention skills, as well as building confidence and increasing motivation.
