TWO PAST BLACK CAPS TO JOIN THE BOPCA AGE GROUP PRE-SEASON COACHING TEAM

Posted: Wednesday, 20 August 2014

The success of the Bay of Plenty senior and age group representative teams over the last decade, are the result of planning and an extensive coaching program, which has seen Bay of Plenty become the leading NZ Cricket minor association in the country.

In order to continue the momentum of Bay of Plenty Cricket into the future, a series of pre-season age group clinics will kick off in the Western Bay of Plenty, then move on to the Lakeland (Rotorua and Eastern BOP) region. All the participants were selected on their on-field form in the past and potential for the future.

The Western Bay clinics, which will be delivered during August and September 2014, will see two former Black Caps and several of the best coaching personnel in the Bay, providing their expertise to the stars of the future.

Mathew Hart, played for the Black Caps in the 1990’s and had outstanding success with his slow left arm spin bowling, taking eight wickets in a test match and best ODI figures of 5/22. In addition to his New Zealand and ND commitments, he played for the Bay of Plenty for sixteen seasons blasting 2446 runs and taking 168 wickets.

Black Cap wicket keeper Gareth Hopkins, who played age group cricket for the Bay from his then Taupo base, also knows about pressure cricket at the highest level and will deliver the wicket keeping modules.

The two batting coaches come from completely different cricket spectrums. David Johnston played a big part in the early development of Daniel Flynn and Kane Williamson and a myriad of ND and Bay of Plenty batsmen. At the other end of the scale, Joe Carter burst upon the first class cricket stage last season, establishing a new record of 674 runs in his debut first class season with the Northern Knights.

Long time Senior Secondary coach Peter Swan, is combining with one of the rising Bay of Plenty senior representative quick bowlers in Tommy Clout, to deliver the pace bowlers clinic.

In addition to the technical side of the game, the coaches will also cover subjects such as training habits, match preparation and decision making along with sharing their personal experiences.

The Western Bay age group clinics kick off this Sunday (24 August 2014) with the batting, wicket keeping and spin bowling workshops utilising facilities at Tauranga Boys College and the Bay Oval at Blake Park, Mount Maunganui.
