WELLINGTON FIREBIRDS DEFEAT THE NORTHERN KNIGHTS WITH FOUR BALLS TO SPARE IN THE FORD TROPHY FINAL

The Ford Trophy Final played at the Bay Oval Mount Maunganui on Saturday (5 April 2014), between the Northern Knights and the Wellington Firebirds, went down to the wire before the Firebirds got home for victory with four balls to spare.

Batting first, the Northern Knights were in early trouble at 29 for the loss of two wickets. Brad Wilson who top scored with 69 and BJ Watling (50) then dug in to produce a hundred run plus partnership.

Mitchell Satner (40) and Daryl Mitchell (30) continued the Knights momentum. The Knights were in a strong position at 211 for five, before the Firebirds bowlers strangled the home teams lower order with the Northern Knights posting 232/9

When Firebirds opener Michael Pollard was dismissed for 43, the Wellington side were 100 for three wickets. James Franklin then took up the challenge to top score with 75. Black Cap Luke Ronchi belted 41 off just 32 balls, as the Wellington Firebirds won the 2014 edition of the Ford Trophy with four balls to spare.
